And yet — Reddit is where some of the most valuable early customer conversations happen, where product feedback is unfiltered, and where a single well-placed post can drive hundreds of signups.
The founders who succeed on Reddit don't win by ignoring the rules. They win by genuinely understanding them.
Most social platforms reward consistency and volume. Reddit rewards relevance. A post with three comments from people who build your exact ICP is worth more than 5,000 impressions from a broad audience. Reddit users are active, opinionated, and specific about what they want — which is exactly the kind of audience that makes for good early customers.
The other difference: Reddit conversations are indexed by Google. A thread from two years ago answering "what's the best tool for X" still gets traffic today. Being in that thread matters long after the original post.
The highest-value Reddit conversations are ones where someone is actively looking for a solution. These appear as:
These are buying moments. Someone who posts "I need a tool to monitor Reddit mentions" and gets a helpful, genuine reply from you is far more likely to become a customer than someone who sees your ad.
Set up keyword monitors for the problem your product solves — not just your brand name. Monitor for the frustrations, the use cases, the switching moments.
When you respond to a thread where someone asks for tool recommendations, the formula is: answer the question fully first, then mention your product if it's genuinely relevant. Don't skip straight to "I built a tool for this."
A response that says "Here are three ways people typically solve this problem. Method A works well if you have X. Method B is better for Y. We built [product] specifically for the Z case — happy to share more if that's your situation" is both genuinely helpful and legitimately promotional.
Rule of thumb: If you removed your product mention from the reply, would it still be a useful comment? If yes, you're doing it right. If the entire value of the comment is the product mention, you're spamming.
Reddit communities are far more receptive to "I'm one of the founders and I built this because I had this exact problem" than "Our product is the leading solution for X." Authenticity and specificity beat positioning language every time.
Share what's hard about building the product. Ask for feedback genuinely. When someone criticises something you've built, engage with the criticism instead of deflecting. Founders who show up as humans get traction on Reddit. Marketers in founder costumes get banned.
These subreddits explicitly welcome founder posts — Show HN-style "I built this" posts, launch announcements, requests for feedback. They won't generate hundreds of customers but they will generate feedback, visibility, and sometimes a handful of early adopters who become advocates.
Rules for these posts: be specific about who the product is for, include pricing or a free tier, invite honest feedback, respond to every comment on launch day.
